Blocked Sink That Won’t Clear? Here’s What to Do Before Calling a Drain Specialist
A blocked sink looks simple right up until it refuses to clear. You pour in unblocker, wait, run the tap, and the water still sits there. If your sink is still blocked after using unblocker, the problem is more stubborn than a small plug below the plughole.
Why Shop-Bought Sink Unblocker Often Does Not Work
Chemical unblocker can shift a small soft blockage close to the plughole. It is much less effective the moment the obstruction sits further down the pipe, in the trap or in the waste run heading away from the sink. Kitchen sinks block on cooled fat, oil, grease, food particles and detergent residue. Bathroom sinks block on hair, soap scum and cosmetic products. None dissolve cleanly in a single dose of shop chemical.
First Checks Before You Touch Anything
- Lift out the plug or strainer if it comes out easily.
- Run another nearby fixture. If only the affected sink is slow, the blockage is local.
- Look under the unit for a damp patch around the trap.
How To Plunge A Sink Properly
- Lift out the plug and clear visible debris.
- Add just enough water to cover the rubber cup.
- Block the overflow opening with a wet cloth.
- Place the plunger squarely and press straight down.
- Pump firmly for 15 to 20 seconds with alternating push and pull.
- Lift the plunger away and see whether water moves.
Cleaning The Trap By Hand
If plunging does not move the blockage, the next step is the trap under the sink. Place a bucket under it, unscrew the two plastic collars by hand, lower the trap into the bucket, clean it out, refit finger-tight only.
Common Mistakes That Make It Worse
- Topping up with more chemicals once one dose has failed.
- Pouring boiling water at a fully blocked sink.
- Forcing wire down the plughole.
- Ignoring a returning foul smell.
When The Problem Is Further Down
Water reappearing in another fixture, gurgling from a nearby drain, a smell that returns after cleaning, and the same sink blocking repeatedly all point to a problem in shared pipework. At that point you need proper drain rods, a small jetter or a CCTV camera.
