Dishwasher Not Draining? Causes, Fixes, and When to Call a Professional

A dishwasher not draining quickly turns from annoying to disruptive. The basin sits with grey water, the cycle ends in an error code, and you are left wondering whether the fault is the appliance, the waste connection, or something deeper in the drainage system.

Why A Dishwasher Stops Draining

A modern dishwasher drains by pumping wastewater through a flexible hose that connects to the kitchen sink waste. If any part of that route is restricted, water sits in the base. The fault can be in three places: inside the dishwasher (filter, sump, pump), at the under-sink connection (hose, kink, air gap), or further down the drainage system.

Step 1: Empty The Dishwasher Safely

  1. Switch the dishwasher off at the mains.
  2. Open the door slowly with towels along the front lip.
  3. Bail out standing water into a bucket.
  4. Remove the bottom rack.

Step 2: Clean The Filter And Sump

The filter is the most common reason a dishwasher will not drain. Twist or lift the filter housing out, rinse under a warm tap, then check the sump for glass, fruit stones, prawn shells, cocktail sticks and vegetable stickers. Refit securely.

Step 3: Check The Drain Hose

The drain hose is the second most common point of failure. Look for kinks against the back panel. The hose should rise in a high loop before dropping to the waste connection – if the loop has dropped, lift and clip it.

Step 4: Check The Sink Side

The dishwasher and kitchen sink almost always share the same drainage route. Fill the sink halfway and pull the plug. If water comes back into the dishwasher base, your sink waste and dishwasher waste are linked and there is a blockage further along the run.

Signs The Issue Is Outside The Dishwasher

  • The kitchen sink drains slowly or smells.
  • Water comes back into the sink when the dishwasher drains.
  • Gurgling from plugholes when the dishwasher runs.
  • The washing machine and other appliances are also slow.
  • The problem returns within days even after cleaning the filter.
