When jetting alone is not enough, mechanical descaling is the answer

In hard-water areas across Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Essex & London and the wider South East, scale and mineral deposits build up on the inside of older cast iron, clay and concrete pipework over years. The bore narrows. The pipe wall becomes rough and catches debris that should pass through. Eventually a once-perfectly-good drain blocks on things that should never have caused a problem.

High-pressure jetting alone often will not shift hardened scale. Call2Drain uses mechanical descaling - rotating cutters and chain knockers fed through the run on a flexible drive shaft - to physically remove the scale and restore close to the original internal diameter. The result is a cleaner pipe, restored flow capacity and a far longer interval between future blockages.

Descaling is normally followed by a jetter pass to flush the debris and a CCTV inspection to confirm the result. We can also reline the descaled section if the underlying pipe is showing structural fatigue, giving you a new smooth bore inside the old one.

When jetting alone will not shift hardened scale

In the hard-water areas around Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Essex & London and the wider South East, scale and mineral deposits build up inside older cast iron, clay and concrete pipes over years, until the bore narrows and the wall turns rough enough to catch debris that should pass straight through. High-pressure water alone often will not remove it.

Mechanical descaling feeds rotating cutters and chain knockers along the run on a flexible drive shaft to physically remove the scale and restore close to the original internal diameter. We follow up with a jetter pass to flush the debris and a CCTV inspection to confirm — and document — the result.

  • Suitable for cast iron, clay and concrete drainage
  • Rotating cutter heads and chain knockers
  • Jetter flush and CCTV confirmation included
  • Often paired with no-dig relining to lock in the result

How a descaling visit works

01

CCTV the run

A pre-clean CCTV pass confirms the pipe is structurally sound enough to accept mechanical descaling.

02

Descale and flush

Rotating cutters break the scale, jetter flushes the debris out of the system.

03

CCTV verify result

A post-descale CCTV pass documents the restored bore - useful evidence if the run will be relined later.

Common questions

Is descaling safe for old clay pipes?

Yes when the pipe is still structurally sound. The pre-clean CCTV tells us whether the pipe can take it or whether we should consider lining instead.

How long does descaling take?

Most domestic runs descale in 2-4 hours. Commercial and industrial runs are quoted on site after a survey.

Will I need to reline after?

Not always. If the underlying pipe is sound, descaling restores flow without further work. Where the pipe is weak we recommend lining to lock in the result.
